How We Work

At Spinnaker, we place great importance on understanding your business, so that we can tailor both our advice and our working relationship to match. We will work closely with you as your business develops and your IP needs change, with regular contact being a cornerstone of our practice.
How We Charge

Our charging structure is competitive and transparent, and where possible we operate on a fixed price basis using either standard charges, or charges agreed with you in advance. We offer fixed price preparation-to-grant packages for patents, trade marks and design registrations. We do not charge for any initial consultation with you prior to commencing work.
Who We Are

Spinnaker has been established by Gareth Scaddan, an experienced patent attorney who has held Partnership and Directorship positions in some of the largest and best known specialist IP firms in the UK. Gareth's professional interests have always been to provide a commercially focused and practical service to his clients - irrespective of whether those clients are blue chip multinationals or small start-ups. Gareth established Spinnaker IP to be able to provide a more bespoke and personal service to his clients. Gareth's main areas of expertise are patents and designs, with Angela Thornton-Jackson, previously a Partner at a top-tier IP firm, providing her extensive expertise in trade marks. You can read more about Gareth and Angela below.Gareth is an experienced Chartered and European patent attorney with a degree in physics and a career which has exposed him to technologies ranging from computer software, video coding and microprocessor architecture through to mechanical inventions and industrial processes. Gareth started his career at D Young & Co LLP, where he trained, qualified and was promoted to Partner. He then spent one year serving at Murgitroyd & Company as the Director responsible for the London Patents team, and for the England Electronics team. Finally, prior to establishing Spinnaker, he spent 18 months at chapman+co, where he gained valuable experience in the operation of a smaller practice.

Gareth handles patent applications and design registrations domestically and internationally, and also advises clients on matters of IP strategy, and infringement. He has undertaken a number of IP audits for a wide spectrum of different types of company, and currently takes an active interest in the UK Patent Box tax relief scheme.

Gareth regularly tutors on the JDD residential course for candidates taking the CIPA P2 'Practice' paper.

Before entering the field of intellectual property, he worked for the Civil Service as a scientist and operational analyst in the fields of military aerospace and space technology.Angela is a registered Trade Mark Attorney with 15 years' experience in trade mark private practice, and having previously held a Partnership position at D Young & Co LLP.

Angela handles a full range of UK, CTM, Madrid Protocol and overseas trade mark filing and prosecution matters; opposition proceedings, revocation and invalidation matters; UK and CTM Appeal proceedings; domain name dispute resolution; Trade mark clearance searching and infringement advice.

Her advice is always pragmatic and commercially focussed. She has a vast experience of working with Blue-Chip multinational companies advising on all aspects of global brands, from clearance searches through to assisting in proceedings before the European Court of Justice (ECJ), and has received personal endorsements for her trade mark and domain name work by personnel at L'Oreal and Unilever.
