About us

The Isle of Wight Zoo is a well-established, popular wildlife centre based on the east coast of the Island and family owned for over 40 years.Following many years under private ownership, it is the Island's original zoo and is well-loved by the local community and widely visited by residents as well as tourists.

The Zoo has recently become part of The Wildheart Trust, a charity which was founded to secure a long-term future for the zoo and enable it to fulfil its global ambitions to make a really meaningful impact on the health of the natural world while improving the well-being of animals in human care.

The zoo is dedicated to engaging, involving and empowering people from both the heart and the head - one of its most important tasks is to convert 'care' into 'action'. It is also committed to providing a life-long, loving home to rescued big cats and other animal residents and the team work holistically to ensure each individual has an enriched and meaningful life.

The Wildheart Trust actively funds and donates its human resources to assist with the in-situ conservation of tigers (in India), lemurs (in Madagascar) and rare moths (IOW).

The zoo was built within the ruins of a Victorian Fort built to guard Sandown's coast, which means we face one of the Isle of Wight's nicest beaches. Once upon a time the zoo owners used to walk tiger cubs on the beach, and we're still famous locally for it. Nowadays we focus on looking after older tigers and giving them a happy retirement.

The kids and I had the best day! We went on all the tours which were fascinating - both to learn about the different species but also about conservation and the amazing rescue stories. The enrichment time with the animals was amazing to watch and the speaker so informative! We had lunch at the zoo cafe and popped out to play crazy golf as u can come and go with your ticket and also will be returning for just £1 each within a week! There are some great packages/gift ideas also to help support these mistreated majestic animals. As an island resident I certainly will continue to visit and support all you are doing! Well done IW Zoo! See you again soon.

Fantastic zoo where the animals are the priority. The zoo is small but this is in no way a negative in my opinion as all the animals are so much closer to you and there isnt much walking to do (great when you have small children who tire and get bored easily walking miles between enclosures).
When we visited the animals were very much awake, active and enjoying their enclosures, especially the big cats. We had spectacular and incredibly close views of all the big cats which was amazing and something ive never experienced at other zoos. Its even nicer knowing that most of the animals here are actually rescued from circuses etc.
The keepers were so knowledgeable and friendly too and they clearly adored the animals in their care. I can't actually think of any other zoo ive visited where the keepers were just there available and happy to chat to visitors and interact with the animals even when it wasnt as part of a planned talk or tour.
Not sure what all the negative reviewers expected be
